COURTESY NOTICE TO HOTEL AND MOTEL GUESTS
COLLECTION OF $5.00 STATE HOTEL-MOTEL FEE (effective July 1, 2015)
PURSUANT TO HOUSE BILL 170 PASSED BY THE 2015 GEORGIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY
During its 2015-2016 Regular Session, the Georgia General Assembly passed House Bill 170. This law requires the collection of a “State Hotel-Motel Fee” (the “Fee”) on hotel and motel room rentals. The Fee is collected by the hotel and passed on to the state of Georgia. The Hotel does not retain or keep the Fee. As of July 1, 2015, all hotel and motel owners in Georgia are now required to charge and collect a $5.00 per night fee from guests staying at their establishment. This Fee is charged for each night the guest stays at the hotel or motel. The Fee will be collected at the time the customer pays for the rental of the guestroom or suite. There are a few exceptions/exemptions:
- Extended Stay Rentals. If the same guest has stayed for 30 consecutive days, they will not need to pay the fee from the 31st day onwards. The Fee must be paid for the first 30 days, and the Fee is not refundable.
- Federal Government Employees. Federal government employees that are paying for their hotel or motel rooms using federal funds only (federal government purchase orders, checks drawn on the federal government, or credit cards centrally billed to the federal government) are exempt from the Fee. For more details, you may contact the State of Georgia’s Department of Revenue at (404) 417-6649.
